Thuja Hoseri (Thuja occidentalis Hoseri) has a compact size and a neat spherical crown. This variety was created by Polish breeders, copying a larger variety - the popular Globoza tuika. The dwarf shrub turned out to be very decorative, frost-resistant and unpretentious to care for.

General characteristics
Thuja western Khozeri is a dwarf species, reaching no more than 80-90 cm in height, and up to 1.2 m in width.
The crown of a young shrub is spherical, and with age it acquires a cushion shape.
In the spring, she demonstrates rich green tones, and by winter it becomes bronze. Shoots are dense, with soft scaly needles.
Spread
Tuika is recommended for cultivation in the 4th zone of frost resistance and in warmer areas. These conditions correspond to central Russia, including the North-West region.
In the south, thuja should be planted in partial shade or shaded to protect against burns.
Landing
For planting, it is better to purchase a seedling with a closed root system. The soil in the container should be moist and the leaves should be green and firm.
If possible, make sure the roots of the plant are alive and healthy and not dry or chopped off.
Landing place
Thuja Hoseri loves sunny areas or partial shade. If necessary, it can also be grown in a shaded corner (the crown will be less dense).
At the landing site, groundwater should not lie close to the surface. The accumulation of moisture from rain or melted snow is also unacceptable.
Almost any soil is suitable: alkaline or acidic, but better - loose, moderately moist and fertile.
Landing technology
If the shrub is planted in black soil or loam, a hole is dug 1 m deep (15-20 cm of a sand layer is laid inside for drainage).
The diameter of the planting hole should be twice the volume of the earthen coma.
The soil removed from the pit is mixed with peat and sand (2: 1: 1), the roots are covered and compacted. When planting, make sure that the root collar of the plant is at ground level.
Tuika is watered (7-8 liters of water) and mulched.
Care
Thuja needs sunlight
The culture needs regular watering and moderate feeding. The land of the trunk circle needs to be mulched.
In early spring, they carry out a sanitary cut (if necessary, formative). In general, plant care is fairly standard.
Watering
Before the onset of heat, the shrub is watered about once a week, focusing on the condition of the soil. (On average, 10-12 liters of water is used per plant.)
In the dry season, more frequent watering and evening sprinkling are needed.
Top dressing
The plant is fed once a season - in the spring. They are used with special fertilizers for conifers: it is better to choose mineral complexes with a minimum amount of nitrogen. The granules are scattered over the area of the trunk circle according to the instructions.
With a lack of specific microelements, foliar dressing is used - spraying.
Mulching and loosening
The soil in the near-trunk circle is mulched with dry bark, needles, sawdust or peat chips.
This procedure helps to retain moisture in the soil, reduces the number of weeds, improves oxygen access, and facilitates maintenance.
If necessary, loosening take into account the superficial location of the roots and carry it out no more than 5 cm in depth.
Pruning
Tuya Khozeri retains its spherical shape well, so she only needs a minimal haircut (or you can do without it altogether).
In early spring, sanitary pruning is carried out, removing dry and damaged shoots. If necessary, thin out the crown or shorten strongly protruding branches.
Preparing for winter
It is better to wrap young seedlings in burlap for the winter and tie them with a ribbon. The trunk circle is covered with a thick layer of peat mulch (8-12 cm).
In February and early spring, when the sun is especially bright, plants are covered to avoid burns.
Reproduction
Most often, Tuika is propagated in the spring (from the second half of March to the end of April). Use the vegetative method.
Shoots of 10 cm are selected from the side branches and broken off with a "heel" (or cut obliquely and a little bark is removed above the cut).
You can simply dip the tips in water and a root formation stimulator, or place them in Kornevin's solution for a day. The rooting substrate is prepared from soil, peat and sand in equal parts, watered with manganese, and fertilized for conifers.
Cutting is recommended in early spring.
The cuttings are deepened every 4-5 cm, leaving twice as much space between the rows. The earth is slightly compacted and well moistened. To maintain the necessary conditions, a greenhouse is built from film or plastic bottles.
Care consists in regular watering, taking into account the condition of the soil and ventilation. Roots appear in 2-4 months, after which young plants can be transplanted.
Diseases and pests
According to the descriptions of gardeners, tuika rarely gets sick, however, with high soil moisture, it can be affected by fungal diseases (shute, fusarium).
The best prevention would be proper care, moisture rationing, spraying with Bordeaux liquid or means like Epin. When signs of illness appear, the shrub must be treated with a fungicide.
Thuja pests can be: thuja aphids, false shields, spider mites and larvae of May beetles. With the latter, animals do well - hedgehogs or birds, as well as special preparations like Aktara or Antichrushch. An insect plant is treated with an aqueous solution of laundry soap and medical alcohol (10 ml per 1 liter). If this does not help, they use insecticides and acaricides.
Application in landscape design
The dwarf globular shrub is often used in landscaping small garden plots.
It is great for rocky and heather gardens, rock gardens and rockeries. In many cases, tuika is grown in containers, which makes it possible to decorate a courtyard that does not have land for planting.
The plant is used in landscaping balconies, roofs, building facades, terraces and verandas. It is used to create live curbs and low hedges. Thuja looks great in combination with flowers and ornamental shrubs (flowering, with original foliage or berries), successfully complementing bright compositions.
Gardeners reviews
According to gardeners, Hoseri tuika is an excellent choice for a small plot. It fits perfectly into the design of any style and is unpretentious in maintenance.
Judging by the reviews, the dwarf species is not yet widely known, but is rapidly gaining popularity. At the moment, the demand for it slightly exceeds the supply. Often, in order to buy a plant in an online store or nursery, you have to order it in advance.
