Clery's garden strawberry is an early ripe variety with large and sweet fruits. With proper care, this fruitful Italian variety, intended for amateur and industrial gardening, is safely grown in temperate climates.
garden strawberry grade "Clery"
the Cleri variety has sweet berries with a strawberry flavor
Cleri fruits do not lose their presentation after a certain shelf life
How did the variety appear?
Clery's garden strawberry was bred by Italian breeders from the Mazzoni Group. Parent varieties are Onebor and Sweet Charlie. Year of creation - 1996. Since 1998, the variety has been protected by a European patent.
Botanical Description
In fact, Clery is a garden strawberry, but gardeners often call it strawberries because of the large size of the berries and the similarity with strawberries.
A brief botanical description of this variety is as follows:
- Bushes. Tall and powerful, semi-spreading, with thick peduncles.
- Leaves. Large, shiny, with long stalks. The color is dark green.
- Flowers. The flowering is plentiful, the flowers are large, snow-white, the middle is bright yellow.
- Fruit. Equal in size. The average weight is 30-40 g. Individual specimens reach 50 g. The color of ripening berries is red, and upon reaching technical maturity, it is dark cherry.
Characteristics
Characteristics of Clery's Garden Strawberries:
- Early ripening grade.
- The fruits ripen at the same time, together. The collection period is 12-15 days.
- Average productivity - 300 g from a bush, from 1 ha - 290 c.
- Flowering - the beginning of May.
- Frost resistance is average. The plant tolerates small spring frosts well.
- The pulp is dense, there are no voids, the taste is sweet, the aroma is strawberry.
- The growing period in one place is 4 years. During this time, the variety retains its variety characteristics. Further, the yield falls, and the fruits are smaller.
The plant is actively developing - during the season, one mother bush gives up to 30 outlets. The abundance of planting material makes it easy to propagate the variety.
Clery’s good agro-technical characteristics make it possible to use the variety in both amateur and industrial gardening.
Growing regions
This variety was created for the northern regions of Italy, so it is most suitable for the southern regions of the Russian Federation. The grade has proved to be quite good in the central regions, in Ukraine and in Belarus. But Cleri is not suitable for the Urals and the northern regions - if the variety is grown here, it is only under film shelters and in greenhouses.
Is the variety refurbished?
The Cleary variety belongs to the repair. This means that it gives several crops. Under favorable circumstances and good care, gardeners can harvest three berries. Repairing varieties are productive, but need increased attention. Clery needs a fertile environment and regular feeding.
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages of Clery:
- dietary properties of berries - they have no acid, so they are suitable for use in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and with high acidity;
- good transportability - berries perfectly tolerate transportation, do not let juice, do not flow and do not crush;
- berries can be stored for a long time - up to 5 days;
- tolerate frosts well;
- undemanding to the composition of the soil;
- high immunity to root diseases, medium - to white and brown spotting;
- the possibility of independent reproduction - many mustaches are formed on the bushes;
- berries do not lose sugar content even in rainy periods - they remain sweet;
- friendly ripening berries.
The gardener in his video shows the Clery cultivar:
Disadvantages:
- in the first year of fruiting, the variety is poorly harvested;
- every 4 years - compulsory transplantation;
- affected by anthracnosis;
- prone to the rapid spread of disease.
- in violation of agricultural technology - the absence of top dressing, planting in infertile soil, the berries become acidic.
There is also an opinion that Clery’s berries have a too primitive taste, there are no exquisite notes and some memorable “highlight”.
The Clery variety retains varietal characteristics for four years, then it degenerates - productivity decreases, the berries become small.
Optimal landing times
The timing of the optimal planting of Clery's garden strawberries:
- From the beginning to mid-August. Bushes planted during this period are rooted qualitatively before the onset of winter - this helps them safely survive low temperatures. In the autumn, fruit buds have time to form on the bushes, yielding crops in the summer of next year.
- In the beginning of April. Young seedlings manage to form powerful roots in the first warm season, and the next year they give a full-fledged crop - the berries are large, and there are many of them. In the first summer, flower stalks and mustaches are recommended to be removed so that the plant in the first year of life does not spend energy on reproduction.
How can Clery be planted?
Clery propagates by any of the existing methods:
- By dividing the bush. Separate part of the bush with roots and planted in the ground.
- Outlets. This strawberry variety gives a lot of mustache, but seedlings are taken from the most productive bushes. It is not recommended to separate the mustache from the bush until the roots grow on it - they give a 100% guarantee of the survival of the seedling.
- Cassette method. This is the best option for Cleary - effective and convenient. They take seedlings from mother bushes - they should have one leaf on each, as well as a spur from a mustache 1 cm long.
Seedlings are planted in cassettes and placed in a greenhouse, covered with agrofibre and a shading net, but without a film - to facilitate hardening. It should be dark in the greenhouse. If seedlings are grown correctly, then the bushes will be ready for planting in 25-30 days.
The least popular method of propagation by seeds - it is time consuming and does not guarantee the conservation of varietal characters. Cleri is planted in open ground or in greenhouses - any cultivation method is suitable for this variety.

Landing
The Italian variety is not picky about soils, but it grows best on chernozems and forest soils. It is not recommended to plant Clery on swampy, loamy and calcareous lands. Poor lands must be fertilized before planting.
Characteristics of the optimal site:
- Flat or with a slight slope. Facing southwest.
- The predecessors are annual grasses, lupins, winter crops. You can not plant strawberries after solanaceous (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant) and cucumbers.
The plot is prepared 3-4 weeks before disembarkation. Soil preparation:
- Remove the weeds. Dolomite or chalk is added to acidic soils, peat or gypsum to alkaline soils.
- Dig up, making compost or rotted manure - 2 buckets per 1 square. m, with the addition of Azofoski (2 tbsp. l.).
- Form a low bed. Sprinkle it with sand - from slugs and centipedes.
Clery is not recommended to be planted on the southern slopes - it snows early and the bushes can freeze.
Seedling planting order:
- Temper seedlings before planting for three days - at a temperature of +10 ° C.
- Choose healthy seedlings. Each bush should have from 5 leaves. Cut the roots to 10 cm and dip in a clay mash.
- To disinfect the soil, pour a solution of copper sulfate (per 10 liters of water - 2 tbsp. L.). For 1 square. m - 1.2-1.5 liters of solution.
- Make holes. The interval between adjacent ones is 30-35 cm. The distance between the rows is 40-45 cm. Pour 0.5 l of warm water into each well.
- Put the bush in the hole, spread the roots, and cover them. The growth bud should be above the soil.
- Pour seedlings - another 0.5 liters under each bush.
- Mulch the landing.
It is recommended to plant strawberry seedlings in the morning or in the evening. Saplings are necessarily shaded to protect from direct sunlight.
How to care for the variety?
Care for Clery is almost the same as for most of the repair varieties. To get several crops per season, the plant needs constant support in the form of watering and top dressing.
Watering, weeding and loosening
The main condition for good yields is regular and moderate watering. Excess moisture will destroy the roots, but the variety tolerates short-term droughts without consequences. Bushes under the root are watered, spring is used for sprinkling in order to activate leaf development. Sprinkling can also be used after picking berries. But the best irrigation method for Clery is drip irrigation.
After watering, it is recommended to loosen the row-spacing, removing weeds. The depth of cultivation is 10-15 cm, near the bushes - 2-3 cm.
Frequent watering contributes to the development of fungal diseases on the roots and deprives the plant of frost resistance.
For irrigation use warm water, its temperature should not be lower than +17 ° C. Cold water negatively affects immunity. The greatest need for water appears during flowering and ovary formation, as well as after harvesting. The average frequency of irrigation, from the end of May until mid-August, is once every 2 weeks. The last watering, water-charging - at the end of October.
Top dressing
The taste and size of berries at Clery directly depends on the fertility of the soil. To replenish the forces spent on fruiting, this maintenance grade requires regular top dressing. For the season, it is advisable to feed strawberry plantings 4 times. Read about spring feeding here.
Clery's top dressing - composition and doses of fertilizers:
Top-up period | Fertilizer name and dosage |
Early spring | Complex fertilizer or foliar top dressing from ammonium, boric acid and potassium permanganate (total 2 g taken, and diluted in 10 l of water). Or make humus - 3-4 kg per 11 square meters. m |
Before flowering | Watered with a solution of nitrophosphate (20 g) and potassium sulfate (2 g) - in 10 l of water. Watering rate - 0.5 l per bush. Or sprayed with boric acid (2 g per bucket of water). |
During flowering | Watered with a solution of cow manure (1: 8). |
After picking berries | Watered with a solution of complex fertilizer - 40 g per 10 liters of water. Add a glass of ash. For 1 bush - 1 liter of solution. |
Throughout the season | Periodically watered with solutions of organic fertilizers (manure, droppings). Organics are bred in water - 1:10. After insisting for 2-3 days, the solution is watered with soil, trying not to fall on the leaves. |
After top dressing, planting must be watered.
Mulching
The soil between the rows is sprinkled with mulch - straw, forest needles, film, tree bark, humus, roofing material are suitable. Mulching begins in spring, it prevents the evaporation of moisture and contact of berries with soil.
Benefits of mulching the soil:
- the number of loosening and watering is reduced;
- weeds do not grow;
- productivity increases.
And if organic mulch is used, then the soil fertility increases along the way. Find out more about mulching soil here.
Trimming mustache and leaves
Cropping Features:
- Strawberry leaves are pruned as soon as they are completely dry. This usually happens at the end of the summer. The main thing is not to miss the moment, so that new leaves can form before winter.
- For trimming use a special tool - pruner or scissors. Hands tearing leaves is not recommended. Leaves are cut at a distance of 5 cm from the soil.
- You can not cut the leaves when they are only slightly yellowed - during this period, the growth and buds are formed. If you disturb the bush at this moment, you can lose the future harvest.
- The mustache is cut off if there is no need to obtain planting material when the strawberry blossoms and bears fruit. Mustaches take a lot of nutrients - this negatively affects the yield and size of berries. The mustache is trimmed with sharp, cutting objects.
Winter preparations
When the leaves and mustache are trimmed, strawberry plantings begin to prepare for winter. In August, the soil is loosened so that it is saturated with oxygen. Last - winter mulching is carried out late in the fall, not earlier than the 3rd decade of October.
A layer of mulch is applied to protect strawberry plantings from frost. As a heater, hay, fallen leaves, needles, straw, agrofibre are suitable. In the spring, the mulch is removed as soon as the bushes start growing. The main rule of mulching is to cover the aisles, and not the bushes themselves.
Diseases: control and prevention
Clery is resistant to fungal infections. The only disease seriously threatening Clery is anthracnose. With this disease, the mustache and petioles are covered with red-brown depressed spots, which eventually turn into black ulcers. Plants dry and die.
Affected leaves or even whole bushes are removed. If signs of the disease appear, plantings are sprayed with the fungicide Antracol (15 g per 10 liters of water) or Ridomil (25 g per 10 liters of water).
To prevent planting, several times per season are sprayed with 2% Bordeaux liquid or a mixture of copper sulfate with lime (100 and 130 g each are dissolved in 6 l of water).
Pests: eradication and prevention
The main pests of Clery's garden strawberries are slugs, ticks, aphids, weevils and chafers. Against these pests, tansy decoction is effective. 700 g of a dry plant are boiled in a bucket for half an hour, cooled and brought up to 10 liters. Soap is added to the broth - 30-40 g.
Pests and control of garden strawberries Clery:
Pest | What harm? | How to fight? |
Aphid | Drinks juices from the green parts of the plant. Leaves curl and dry. | Spray with garlic infusion. For 10 l take 200 ml of garlic and onion juice, and 150 ml of dandelion juice. Soap solution is also suitable - 60 g per bucket of water. |
Weevil | Beetle larvae infect buds and ovaries, they stop developing and dry out. | Spray with potassium permanganate (5 g per bucket of water) or Intavir (2.5 tablets in 10 l of water). |
Straw Mite | Suck juices from the green parts of the plant. Affected bushes shrink and dry. | Sprayed with colloidal sulfur - 8 g per 10 liters of water. Or Karbofos - 60 g per 8 liters. |
Slug | Eat leaves and berries. On the affected leaves - round notches along the edges, in the fruits - eaten indentations. | Beds are pollinated with ash in the evenings - when slugs crawl out. Lay out traps - wet objects, from which they then collect slugs. |
Chafer | Larvae, affecting the roots of plants, lead to their death. | Six months before transplanting, Bazudin is introduced into the soil (5-7 g per 5 square meters). |
Prevention measures:
- destruction of plant debris;
- regular loosening of beds;
- planting between rows of onions and garlic;
- sulfur pollination during the growth of leaves and after harvesting;
- spraying with a tobacco-soap solution (100 g insist 48 hours and add 40 g of soap).
Harvesting, storage and transportability
Even the most transportable variety is not recommended to be transferred from one place to another. Therefore, the berries are immediately stored in a container in which it is to be transported.
Tips for collecting, storing and transporting berries:
- To extend the shelf life of the berries, pick them along with the stalks.
- If the berries are supposed to be stored or transported, do not water the plantings before harvesting.
- Pick berries in the morning or evening. When harvesting, immediately lay aside the damaged fruit.
- The best containers for collecting and storing berries are wooden or plastic crates. Put paper or cloth on the bottom of the drawers. You can also stack the fruits in wicker baskets or glass containers.
- In the refrigerator, at a temperature of 0 to +2 ° C, the berries are stored for 5-6 days. If you leave the berries at room temperature, then after a day they will begin to deteriorate.
Gardeners reviews
Ivan R., Voronezh. The variety is not for lazy people. It requires a lot of care and money. Too susceptible to parasites and temperature extremes. I spent a lot of money on all kinds of fertilizing, on agrofibre, drugs for diseases - but not in vain. The berries taste wonderful with a strawberry flavor. Good for sale.
Lydia T., Moscow Region. I grow this variety for myself, not for sale.From berries it turns out an excellent compote for the winter. Berries do not boil when cooking jam. All preparations are obtained with a real strawberry smell. The berries have a dense but juicy pulp. A lot of mustaches on the bush - you can easily propagate plantings without spending money on seedlings.
