Historical information about the breed
This is a little-known new breed from Ukrainian breeders, which was received in 2005. They crossed the egg breeds of hens - colored and white, very popular among poultry farmers, leggorn. These laying hens inherited high egg production from their parents.
The great advantage is also that the bird is not a hybrid, which means that it can be independently propagated without any problems. At the same time, the positive characteristics of the bird are not lost.
It got its name from the location of the Poultry Institute, where it was obtained - in the village of Borki, located near Kharkov. The second name comes from the Ukrainian word “barva”, which translates as “color”.
Exterior and Bird Standards
Representatives of the breed do not differ in impressive size. These are small chickens with a mass of 2.1 kg, the weight of a rooster averages 2.7 kg.
The main breed standards include:
- Head. The bird is small, its face is red, and its eyes are orange.
- Beak. Slightly curved, grayish with a yellow tint.
- Crest. Bright red color (pinkish allowed) and leaf-shaped. Males have up to 8 long teeth on it; females have a more modest size.
- Body. With a thin skeleton, strong. The skin is yellowish. The back is flat. The cock has a stomach tucked up, chest "wheel"; in layers, the stomach is well developed.
- Wings. Small, well pressed to the body. The feathers are hard and dense, there is little fluff.
- Tail. High set, long and magnificent. Dark spots are visible on the tail feathers.
- Paws. The length of the legs is medium; they are yellow without plumage.
This breed is characterized by cuckoo color. A female and a male can be distinguished at a young age. Chickens are characterized by a darker color. However, the color becomes lighter down. In many representatives, the feathers on the stomach may have a white color, but feathers with a light red tint are also allowed. Now you can meet Barkovsky hens with white, red or red color.
To obtain offspring do not use:
- full collar cocks;
- with a shallow crest and earrings.
Productive Features
Borkovsky barbed chickens are representatives of the egg breed. They begin to rush early - from 4 months of age. Up to 265 eggs can be obtained from them per year. The greatest egg production is observed at the 7-8th month of life. A high rate persists until 2-2.5 years, then it gradually begins to decline.
The mass of one egg laid by the young does not exceed 53 g; by the year its weight reaches 59 g. However, some owners claim that the weight of the egg can reach up to 65 g. The shell of eggs is cream or light brown in color. Taste is excellent.
Despite the small live weight, their meat is dietary and tasty. By two months, chickens weigh an average of 1.2 kg.
An overview of this breed of chickens, see the video below:
Temperament and maternal instinct
Layers are calm and friendly, but rather timid. They quickly get used to the owner, do not run away from him.
About the males, the data varies. Some owners claim that they have a peaceful disposition. Others note aggressiveness, often conflicts spill over into fights, the outcome of which can be the killing of an opponent. Aggressive individuals should be immediately sent to the soup.
Experts explain this contradiction by the fact that the breed is quite young and did not have time to form. If pugnacious roosters are not used for breeding, then aggressiveness will soon disappear.
From Borkovsky Barbarian hens excellent hens are obtained. Often they lay eggs and other chicken breeds. The viability of hatched offspring by a brood hen is up to 96%, from the incubator it is lower (about 90%).
Pros and cons of the breed
The advantages of the breed include:
- high immunity;
- autosexuality, that is, the possibility of dividing by the sex of chickens (according to the color of the fluff) in a day old;
- excellent maternal instinct;
- high hatching of chicks;
- their high survival rate;
- good adaptive ability;
- frost resistance of birds.
Among the disadvantages are:
- aggressive roosters;
- average egg production compared to egg crosses.
Bird keeping
Chickens of this breed are unpretentious in care. They quickly adapt to new conditions, tolerate frosts well.
Chicken coop
The premises for chickens should be dry, bright and ventilated, as, however, for all representatives of poultry. Except that for them perches can be placed at a height of not only 0.7-0.8 m from the floor, but also much higher. The flying abilities of chickens in this case are a big plus - this saves space in the house. How to organize perches in a chicken coop, is described here.
For the winter, chicken houses are insulated. The temperature in the room should be always positive. It is enough to insulate only the walls and floor, heaters do not install.
The main condition is the absence of drafts. If the bird can still endure frosts, then the walking wind indoors will negatively affect its health. A deep litter is laid on the floor, which is regularly changed to avoid the development of infectious diseases.
Be sure to put baths with ash or sand for swimming. In this case, the chickens will not suffer from the invasion of external parasites.
Daylight hours are prolonged in the autumn-winter period by means of additional illumination. The optimal length of the day should be 12-14 hours, then the laying hen will lay eggs in the cold season.
How to build a chicken coop according to all requirements with your own hands - read in our other article.
Walking yard, feeders and drinking bowls
When constructing a walking yard for them, it should be borne in mind that they have strong wings and are able to fly. Therefore, they either make high barriers through which they cannot fly, or cover the aviary with a net on top.
This small bird loves to rake feed with its paws. Due to its modest size, it manages to get into even special feeders, the structure of which should prevent the penetration of the bird into it. Therefore, it is better for them to purchase models of feeders with openings only for the head.
How to make a feeder yourself is described in detail here.
Seasonal molting and planned herd replacement
Shedding of birds begins in October and lasts for 2 months. When changing feathers, hens cease to trot.
Females rush well in the first 2 years, then the egg production rate begins to gradually decrease. Therefore, to keep them for more than 4 years is impractical.
Feeding ration
The diet of adults and chicks varies, so the organization of nutrition occurs in different ways.
Adults
The main food product of adults is grain. It should provide the bird with all the necessary vital nutrients. Experts recommend the use of grain mixtures, which are prepared from wheat, oats, corn and rye, or use industrial compound feeds consisting of a mixture of grain. In summer, part of the grain is replaced by greens - fresh grass. For a large livestock, it is easier to cut it with a special grinder.
In winter, especially laying hens, vitamins are needed. Their main source is fresh vegetables. If it is not possible to provide livestock with vegetables or grass, then vitamin complexes are added to the diet, which can be purchased in specialized stores.
How to increase laying egg laying in winter is described in this article.
For a strong shell, calcium is added to the diet. In birds, a container with a shell rock, chopped shell or chalk should always be in the room. A plate with small pebbles is set nearby for the normal functioning of the digestive system.
A clear water cup should always be freely available. In the heat, the need for fluid increases. You can make a suitable drinker for chickens yourself. How to do it - read here.
Chicks
In order for the chicks to quickly gain weight and grow well, observe the diet. The first 7 days of life they are fed every 3 hours - during the day they eat 6 times.
Food must be ground and cooked crumbly. A chicken should easily swallow it. In the first 3 days they are fed with chopped boiled egg, then include boiled cereals and greens. To enrich food with vitamins, fish oil, cottage cheese, yogurt and yeast are added. Next, vegetables and mixed feed are introduced.
At 1 month young animals are offered “live” food - maggots, insects. From 1.5 months they eat together with the main herd. But, as their muscle mass continues to increase, they are given more proteins, vitamins and minerals.
Breeding chickens
Breeding chickens does not cause any difficulties. The brood hens cope with their duties “excellent”, you can also use the incubator to get chicks. Healthy chickens that meet breed standards are selected for breeding. One rooster is left for 10 females.
Adult chickens are kept separately by sex, because roosters can be pugnacious, and they need more feed.
Common Diseases
Birds of this breed are highly immune and rarely get sick. The main triggering factors for the development of infections are improper diet, care and maintenance.
Layers during the period of active laying of eggs need more minerals and vitamins. Otherwise, they develop vitamin deficiency, which immediately affects productivity and their health.
Reviews of breeders and farmers
Reviews of hens Borkovskaya Barvistaya are mostly positive and enthusiastic, breeders like the unpretentiousness and egg laying of birds.
Taras, 53 years old, Rostov region. Breeders have pleased me. Not a breed, but a fairy tale. Chickens remind me of a Ryaba chicken. The eggs, however, are not golden, and we don’t need it, you won’t be fed with gold. The eggs are large, the hens are carried well. The layers themselves are small, pretty. They take up little space in the house. In winter, in spite of the fact that I was warm in the barn and I was highlighting it, they began to rush less.
Olga Dmitrievna, 65 years old, Moscow region. Previously, the chickens contained outbreds, especially did not bother about this, it was not for the exhibition that I should carry them. And then in one winter they stopped rushing with me. I went to a neighbor of the eggs to ask, and she advised me of this breed. 3rd year I already have them. I look at them and do not fall in love with my swallows. Now I only breed them.
